Support of diplomatic missions to fight crime mulled

The Ministry of Public Security, along with the Police decided to obtain support of the diplomatic missions to tackle international drug traffickers engaged in various crimes and had sought refuge in other countries.
The decision was taken at a meeting yesterday (18) between Minister of Public Security Rear Admiral (retd) Sarath Weerasekara, Minister of Justice Ali Sabry PC, Secretary to the Ministry of Justice M.M.P.K. Mayadunna, Secretary to the Ministry of Public Security, Major General (retd) Jagath Alwis and IGP Chandana. D. Wickremeratne.
Police Spokesman, DIG Ajith Rohana said, the discussion was focused on tackling the major drug trafficking network, intensifying probes into child abuse cases, preventing crimes in the country and amending laws appropriately.
He said, all stakeholders agreed to take appropriate action to expedite constant operations to break the drug network. “Investigations highlighted that the import of synthetic drugs have increased overtaking drugs like heroin and cocaine,” he stated, adding, many important decisions were also taken to ensure the security of the public.
