Strong winds to be expected – Met Dept

The Department of Meteorology, yesterday (11) stated that the wind speed can increase up to 40-50 kilometres per hour (kmph) at times in the island, particularly in the Northern, North-Central and North-Western Provinces, the Districts of Hambantota,
Trincomalee and Matale and along the Western slopes of the Central Hills, while showers or thundershowers will be experienced extending from Puttalam to Hambantota via Colombo and Galle.
According to the weather forecast report, wind speeds can increase up to 60 kmph in the sea area off the coast extending from Kankesanturai to Colombo via Mannar and from Matara to Pottuvil, while the wind speed can increase up to 50 kmph at times in the other sea areas around the island. There is a possibility that near shore sea areas off the coast extending from Beruwala to Hambantota via Galle, may experience surges due to the effect of swell waves, 2-2.5 metres in height. The Navy and fishing communities and those living in coastal areas were requested to be vigilant in this regard.
