The Association of Information Technology Professionals (AITP) stated, in the face of the threat contained in the clauses of the Government proposed Bill for the 20th Amendment to the Constitution, the only alternative left is the strengthening of the Parliament.

Issuing a press release in this regard, they charged, in the mooted Bill, there are several harmful contents which could undermine the Legislature and the Judiciary, while granting unprecedented powers to the Executive. The Association alleged, if the new Bill is ratified by the Government, it will spell doom for both the Parliament and the Judiciary with the independence of the two institutions being seriously challenged.

They said, all other independent institutions also stand to suffer at the hands of the unlimited powers exercised by the Executive if the new Bill is passed.

They further said the public had not given a two-thirds majority to the Government to turn the Presidency into a dictatorship at the expense of the Parliament and the Judiciary.

The Association advised the Government not to belittle the mandate given by the people by attempting to ratify Amendments to the Constitution according to their own whims and fancies and instead strive hard to overhaul the present Constitution in favour of a fresh one that could address the needs of the people.
