Stealing NWSDB water meters: Deraniyagala PS Chair remanded

The Chairman of the Deraniyagala Pradeshiya Sabha has been taken into custody by the Deraniyagala Police for stealing a stock of water meters belonging to the National Water Supply and Drainage Board (NWSDB).
The Chairman was produced before the Avissawella Magistrate and remanded till 19 April.
He was taken into custody following a lengthy investigation by the Deraniyagala Police, into a complaint lodged by the Engineer in charge of the Kamburugama Water Project of the NWSDB.
The NWSDB had stored the water meters and other equipment at a warehouse in Kamburugama.
The Project Engineer lodged a complaint at the Deraniyagala Police on 31 March that 477 water meters and other equipment had been stolen from the warehouse.
Three persons including a clerk at the warehouse and a driver had been arrested by the Deraniyagala Police. Subsequently, the Police conducted an investigation to find the stolen water meters and they had received a tip-off that the Deraniyagala Pradeshiya Sabha Chairman had some of the missing water meters.
98 water meters were found in the suspect’s possession.
