Five Parliament staffers test positive for COVID-19
Sergeant-at-Arms Narendra Fernando stated today (16) that five staff members of the parliament tested positive for COVID-19.
The five identified are a member of the Parliamentary Food and Beverage Division staff, a Transport Division staff, two Police officers, and one staffer from the Office of the Chief Government Whip.
PCR tests were carried out on 13 January for 463 staff members of the Parliament and 15 Ministers and MPs. Reports show the MPs and ministers tested negative while five members of the staff tested positive.
478 members of the Parliamentary Staff, 16 Ministers and MPs were present for PCR testing yesterday (15). Sergeant Narendra Fernando stated that investigations are being carried out further into the matter.
SJB MP Ranjith Maddumabandara said the matter should not be underestimated and investigations should be carried out more often. He also mentioned the Parliament does not have protection against the COVID-19.
The MP also pointed out that the Committee on Parliamentary Business to be held on 18 January should give serious consideration in this regard.
