Sri Lankans made debtors of Rs. 250M per hour: Handunetti
According to the country's debt crisis, the Government has made every citizen has become Rs. 250 million in debt per hour, the former Chairman of COPE, JVP politburo member Sunil Handunetti revealed during a press conference held at JVP headquarters yesterday (09).
The total outstanding debt of the Government has accumulated from Rs. 14,155 billion in 2019 to Rs. 16,427 billion in 2020, he said, adding that the central Government debt alone will be more than Rs. 15,000 billion with the debt and guarantees of other Government institutions, which has become Rs. 16,427 billion by today.
Moreover, he said the country's debt share had increased by Rs. 2,272 billion in one year alone, adding that the country's continued debt collection from 1948 to 2005 was Rs. 2,226 billion, and the extent of the tragedy is further illustrated by the Rs. 2,272 billion loans in 2020 alone.
