Sports Sri Lanka - Bangladesh Under-19 series: Sri Lanka draw first blood

Sri Lanka won by 42 runs against the visiting Bangladesh team, winner of the last Youth World Cup, in the first game at Rangiri Dambulla International Cricket stadium yesterday, to take a 1-0 lead in the series comprising 5 games. Sri Lanka won the toss and electing to bat scored 228 runs for 9 wickets in 50 overs. Right hander Pawan Pathiraja coming in at No.4 scored a valuable 67 runs in 87 balls with 5 boundaries. Sadisha Rajapaksha (28 in 58 balls with 3 boundaries) and Pawan were involved in a 53 runs partnership for the 4th wicket, and with deputy skipper Raveen de Silva (29 in 47 balls with 2 boundaries) was involved in a valuable 80 runs stand for the 5th wicket. 

Tail end No.10, the lefthanded Yasiru Rodrigo scored an unbeaten 25 in 15 deliveries with 3 boundaries and a six). Dunith Wellalage (15), Chamindu Wickramasinghe (14), Jeewaka Shasheen (13) and Shevon Daniel (12) also made useful contributions. Ripon Mondol claimed 3 wickets for 59 runs and Md Ashikur Zaman claimed 2 wickets for 43 runs. Ariful Islam, Md Golam Kibria, Md Meherob Hasan and Naimur Rohman Noyon claimed one wicket each. Bangladesh were bowled out for 186 runs in 46.2 overs. No. 4 right hander and deputy skipper Aich Mollah scored a valuable 86 runs in 94 deliveries with 9 boundaries. Ariful Islam scored 38 runs in 67 deliveries with 2 boundaries. 

Of the other batsmen only Iftikher Hossain reached double figures, scoring 16 runs. Aich Mollah and Ariful Islam were involved in a valuable 70 runs stand for the 5th wicket. Openers Mahfijul Islam Robin (09) and Iftikher Hossain (16) put on 31 runs for the first wicket. Right arm off break bowler Traveen Mathew claimed 4 wickets for 29 runs, Shevon Daniel claimed 2 wickets for 21 runs, while Matheesha Pathirana, Dunith Wellalage and Chamidu Wickramasinghe claimed one wicket each. Sadeesh Jayawardana, Jeewaka Shasheen, Shevon Daniel, Pawan Pathiraja and Sadisha Rajapaksha made their debut for Sri Lanka. The second game of the series will be held on Monday (18).
