News Squatters get Deeds to lands

The handing over of official deeds of lands to those who had occupied such lands in an unauthorised manner, took place under the aegis of President Gotabaya Rajapaksa at the Presidential Secretariat yesterday, a statement from the President’s Media Division (PMD) said.

The intention of the present Government is to allow all citizens here to lay claim to official land deeds in keeping with proposals contained in the election manifesto of the Government titled ‘Vistas for Prosperity and Splendor’.

The PMD stated that based on provisions contained in Land Development Amendment Act and State Land Ordinance, 20,000 who had been selected legally encompassing the country would be provided with land deeds as part of the first phase of this process.

The PMD noted that significant amount of focus was being given through this programme to low income groups who make a living through farming.

The President had emphasized that before the end of 2021, the Government would look to hand over 100,000 land deeds.
