Sputnik V jab approved for emergency use – NMRA

The National Medicines Regulatory Authority (NMRA) approved the Russia’s Sputnik V COVID-19 vaccine for emergency use, sources said yesterday (4). They said, however, that formal approval has yet to be given.

Director General and Chief Executive Officer  (CEO) of the NMRA, Dr. Kamal Jayasinghe, said he was waiting for the report on the vaccine to be submitted for his approval.

Meanwhile, General Manager of the State Pharmaceuticals Corporation (SPC), Dinusha Dassanayake, said the vaccine had been cleared by the NMRA’s Expert Committee. SPC authorities are scheduled to hold discussions with manufacturers of the Sputnik V vaccine, Gamaleya National Research Centre of Epidemiology and Microbiology. 

Sri Lanka is currently using the stock of Oxford-AstraZeneca Covishield vaccine and is scheduled to receive another stock of COVID-19 vaccines on 

7 Sunday  under the World Health Organization’s COVAX facility.
