By Sandeep Tissaaratchy
Four suspects were taken into custody for conducting classes which spread extremist ideologies among post GCE O/L students. Two suspects residing in Oluvil area were taken into custody by the Terrorism Organisation Division (TID) on 7 April for conducting classes for students in the area, Police Spokesman DIG Ajith Rohana said.
Police investigations reveal the suspects had used various footages used by international terrorist organisations for lectures and forced the students to participate in physical fitness training.
Some students had refused to participate in the fitness programmes which had led to an assault by two of the suspects. DIG Rohana said the TID is locating the students in order to direct them to the Judicial Medical Officer (JMO).The investigations revealed the suspects received training and guidance from the Easter Sunday terror attack bomber, Zaharan Hashim. The 30-year-old suspect and 39-year-old suspect have been brought to the TID headquarters in Colombo and have been detained under the Provisions of the Prevention for Terrorism Act (PTA).
The arrests took place following the arrest of two other individuals a few days ago who had committed the same offence in 2018, DIG Rohana said. The suspects who were from Muttur were taken into custody by the Criminal Investigation Department. The TID is conducting further investigations.
