Sports Ministry asks SLA to cut down on team to India
The Sports Ministry has asked SLA to cut down on the 15-member team recommended for the forthcoming Interstate Athletics Championship in India to five.
To accommodate the request made by Indian authorities, SLA included a 4x100m women’s relay team to the original contingent. However, the Athletics Federation of India has intimated they can provide full board to only five members, while only accommodation will be provided free to the rest of the contingent.
Ceylon Today learns the Sports Ministry had informed SLA to send only the team selected for the Kazakhstan tour - Kalinga Kumarage (400m), Nadeesha Ramanayaka (400m), Sumedha Ranasinghe (Javelin Throw), Nimali Liyanarachchi (800m) and Nilani Rathnayaka (3000m steeplechase).
In the meantime, until such time SLA receives a written reply from the Sports Ministry, they are going ahead with the process of finalizing all formalities for the visit to India, and had asked all 15 athletes selected for the tour to call over at SLA headquarters yesterday. (AK)
