Spitting at PHIs: Suspect Jailed for Six Years

The COVID-19 infected person from Atulugama, who spat on the faces of Public Health Inspectors, was sentenced to six years rigorous imprisonment, Police Spokesman DIG Ajith Rohana yesterday (21) said.
He said, the suspect was also fined Rs 10,000. Speaking further DIG Rohana said, eight charges were framed against the suspect and he pleaded guilty to them.
He noted that the investigations revealed that the person had also been involved in various crimes earlier. “Some of the cases against him are pending in the High Court. Earlier, he has also been given suspended sentences by the Court,” he added.
Apart from the fine and the rigorous imprisonment the suspect was ordered to pay Rs 100,000 compensation to each complainant who was affected in the incident. Therefore, the suspect is bound to pay Rs 400,000 to the PHIs and other health authorities.
The accused in question had refused to be taken to a treatment centre and subsequently spat on the faces of PHIs.
