Minister of  Trade Dr. Bandula Gunawardena told Parliament that a special permit system has been introduced for confectionery and bakery products manufacturers to import palm oil.

Assuring that the bakery and confectionery industry in the country will not collapse because of the palm oil import and palm cultivation bans, Gunawardena said anyone could direct an appeal to the Finance Secretary to import the necessary palm oil required for their industries.

“There is no reason for anyone to panic due to the palm oil and cultivation ban. The Government is working to uplift the country’s coconut and coconut oil industry. We also need to reduce spending USD on importing palm oil products at the same time. However, it doesn’t mean that we will let palm oil required industries to collapse. So, no one needs to panic,” he added.
