Local Speaker endorses CAA Amendment Bill

Speaker Mahinda Yapa Abeywardena signed the Consumer Affairs Authority (Amendment) Bill today (23).

Accordingly, the Consumer Affairs Authority (Amendment) Act, No 09 of 2003 was declared effective from yesterday (22).

The (Amendment) Bill, presented by Minister of Trade, Bandula Gunawardena, was passed without amendments yesterday (22) following a Parliamentary debate, while the Extraordinary Gazette Notification relating to this Bill was issued on Sunday (19).

The legislation will increase the fines imposed on traders who do not sell goods at the maximum retail prices issued by the CAA, by way of a gazette notification.

Moreover, the fines imposed on all businesses in this regard will be revised, while those convicted of a related offence may be fined, imprisoned, or both, State Minister of Co-operative Services, Marketing Development and Consumer Protection Lasantha Alagiyawanna said.
