The State Pharmaceutical Corporation (SPC) has purchased 14 million doses of the Pfizer-BioNTech COVID-19 vaccine.

The order was made on the instructions of the Epidemiology Unit of the Ministry of Health, SPC General Manager Dinusha Dassanayake said.

He added that the consignment will be received from Pfizer's manufacturing plant in Belgium, in December.

The delivery of the consignment will begin after the completion of an ongoing order of five million doses, Dassanayake said.

The National Medicines Regulatory Authority approved the Pfizer vaccine for emergency use in Sri Lanka in May of this year, after which it was initially administered to those who received the first dose of the AstraZeneca vaccine.
