South Africa trounce Sri Lanka once again
By Anjana Kaluarachchi
South Africa completely outplayed Sri Lanka once again as they registered a ten-wicket victory, chasing Sri Lanka’s modest tally of 120 in just 14.4 overs. Both openers Quinton de Kock (59n.o) and Reeza Hendricks (56 n.o) made unbeaten half centuries as they were not really challenged throughout the chase, leaving Sri Lanka with more worries than answers ahead of the T20 World Cup which begins in a month's time.
Sri Lanka came to the T20 series, riding high in confidence after their 2-1 ODI series win, but the visitors completely outplayed them, Especially SL batsmen could not find any answers as their inability to rotate strike and play spin were highlighted.
Batting first Kusal Perera’s 39 at top and Chamika Karunarathne’s 24 of 19 helped Sri Lanka to barely post 120 for 8. Perera did not field following his inning as it was reported he was having breathing issues same as Sunday where he recently recovered having tested positive for COVID-19. Out of 120 deliveries of the inning Sri Lanka played 50 dot deliveries putting pressure on themselves, while losing three wickets in the first four overs where they never recovered from. Kusal Perera who again got a start in his 33 delivery 39 did trouble towards the end of his inning and finally was trapped lbw once again.
Apart from the unfortunate dismissal of Aviska Fernando, all others gifted their wickets with poor stroke selection and lack of presence in mind. Karunarathne looked fluent in his early innings, but he was once again only sent to bat at number nine, even below Wanindu Hasaranga and incoming Lahiru Madushanka. Karunarathne once again responded well with the bat scoring 24 with two massive sixes where he showed that he is better than batters who walked to the middle ahead of him.
