Somitha new head coach of SL netball

As revealed by Ceylon Today earlier, former National player and Skipper Somitha de Alwis has been appointed head coach of the National netball team to replace Thilaka Jinadasa, while P.D.N. Prasadi remains as assistant coach. This was confirmed by NFSL President Victoria Lakshmi.
“Somitha de Alwis has been appointed as the head coach of the National team after NFSL conducted interviews for the position on Monday (6). The new coach will be in charge for a one-year period, and we will consider extending the period based on performance,” said the NFSL President.
Having coached in a variety of capacities the 51-year-oldis held in high esteem in netball circles. More recently Somitha has been involved with the Navy Netball team, and guided them to clinch the National tournament in both 2016 and 2017.
A product of Dharmaloka Central College Kelaniya, Somitha graduated to the national level after joining HNB in 1995. She enjoyed an outstanding career as a player in one of Sri Lanka's golden eras in netball. A regular member of the National team, Somitha served as the Vice-Captain of the side in 1998 and 1999, and her brilliant performances led her to Captain the side in 2003-2004.
Somitha has coached the HNB team with great success and they have won several National titles. Their greatest achievement has been winning the National Championship consecutively for 12 years.
Recently, Thilaka Jinadasa vacated her post as head coach after guiding the National team to two Asian Championships – first in 2009 and again in 2018. Her departure brought to an end an immense service she rendered towards the success of Sri Lanka Netball, which registered many wins under her tenure.
