Sokians CC Girls’ team top Division ‘B’

The second level (Division ‘B’) of the inaugural CFSL Online Women Rapid Team Chess Championship 2021 organised by the Chess Federation of Sri Lanka was held on 16 January 2021.  

The three teams who topped Group ‘C’ joined the other teams already in Group ‘B’ and battled for supremacy to qualify for Group ‘A’. The top three teams according to match points advanced to Group ‘A’.

From the initial round Sokians CC Women were out to show their class. They won the first round against Fischer CC Girls ‘C’ Team. Also, Giriulla CC, Castle Siege CC, Fischer CC Girls ‘B’ Team, Kriegspiel CC, Sokians CC Girls and many more teams were able to score two match points against their respective opponents.

Deyon Super CC and All Queens were in the limelight in the second round with their clean sweeps against Emtoo-Esty and Mayor CC Girls teams respectively. Meanwhile, Giriulla CC consolidated their position by winning against Black Knight CC. Also, Sokians CC Women’s, Castle Siege, Kriegspiel CC and Sokians CC Girls’ teams defeated their respective opponents in the top half of the pairings.

Giriulla CC maintained their consistency in the third round by defeating the strong Sokians CC Girls after a great battle. Further, Castle Siege CC upset Sokians CC Women with an advantage of one point. Other games in the top half of the team pairing ended in favour of Kriegspiel CC and Black Knights CC.

At the end of the fourth round, Giriulla CC, Castle Siege CC, Black Knights CC, Sokians CC Women and Sokians CC Girls’ were on top of the leaderboard by defeating their respective opponents after some nail biting games.

The fifth round completely reshaped the leaderboard with Castle Siege ‘A’ overcoming the hitherto unbeaten Giriulla CC and Black Knights CC getting the better of Kriegspiel CC. Also, Sokians CC Women dragged the Sokians CC Girls from the top quarter of the leaderboard by winning the round with an advantage of a point.

In the sixth round, Black Knights CC found themselves on top of the leaderboard with victory against Castle Siege ‘A’. Meanwhile the games of the second and third board were equally shared among Sokians CC Girls’, Giriulla CC, Kriegspiel CC and Fischer CC ‘B’ teams.

At the end of the day, however, everything turned in favour of Sokians CC Girls, who defeated the valiant Black Knights CC to leapfrog to the top of the leaderboard. 

Fischer Chess Club Girls ‘B’ Team and Castle Siege Chess Club ended the day obtaining second and third places by defeating their respective opponents.

First runner-up: Fischer Chess Club Girls ‘B’ (Rumethma Thennakoon, W.M.M.N. Wijesinghe, Manisha Suchini Gunaratne, Chanethma Devangi Marasinghe, Chamodya Yapa Bandara)

Second runner-up: Castle Siege CC (Oneli Omaya Wilvalaarachchi, K.M. Dahamdi Sanudula, P.W.G. Gaveshi Wickramarathne, Y.W. Oneli Vihanga Weerawardana, Tharuli Vihasna Ranganath)
