A motion presented to suspend Sectoral Oversight Committees (SOCs)until the appointment of Members was passed yesterday (24), in Parliament.
Leader of the House, Minister Dinesh Gunawardena presented the motion to suspend the committees until the Parliamentary Consultative Committees under the 20th Amendment to the Constitution was set up.
Leader of the Opposition Sajith Premadasa and National People’s Power (NPP) Leader Anura Kumara Dissanayake objected the motion.
Premadasa alleged the Government tried to avoid a discussion on the 20th Amendment to the Constitution at the Sectoral Oversight Committee.
In response, Speaker Mahinda Yapa Abeywardena stated Samagi Jana Balawegaya (SJB) MP Mayantha Dissanayake has been assigned to study the matter and to present a report on it.
Premadasa then queried as to why the committees are going to be suspended before receiving the said report. Dissanayake said the committees should not be suspended until the said report is presented.
