SLPP not walking the talk – Prof. Piyadasa
BY Thameenah Razeek
The Sri Lanka Podujana Peramuna (SLPP) has taken an arbitrary decision when naming National List candidates and has also reduced one National List slot that was allocated to the Sri Lanka Freedom Party (SLFP) without the consent of SLFP Chairman, claimed former SLFP General Secretary, Professor Rohana Lakshman Piyadasa.
Prof. Piyadasa claimed yesterday (10), that before the General Election, SLPP Leaders had promised SLFP Leaders that they will be given two National List slots for Prof. Piyadasa and former Northern Province Governor Dr. Suren Raghavan.
However, after the victory of the SLPP, the Party has decided to give only one seat to the SLFP and had named Dr. Raghavan without the consent of SLFP Chairman, Maithripala Sirisena, Prof. Piyadasa alleged, claiming that Sirisena had wanted to allocate the seat to him but that the SLPP had already sent the names list to the Election Commission.
He expressed his regret on the decision taken by the SLPP Leaders, and opined that it is pathetic to see that the SLPP is not walking the talk and is instead trying to go on their own by taking arbitrary decisions and behaving and conducting themselves in an autocratic manner. Fielding a question, Prof. Piyadasa stressed that there could be consequences arising in the future regarding this issue, since many SLFP Members and decision -makers are disappointed over the move made by the SLPP without their permission.
“There will be discussions in this regard. Not only I, others in the Party are disappointed by this. Many reports are now saying that Dr. Raghavan is a member of the Tamil Diaspora. It is questionable as to why the SLPP decided to allocate the seat to such a person who has allegations against him they could have sought and obtained our consent,” he further claimed.
