SLPP member accuses Devani of permitting deforestation
Sri Lanka Podujana Peramuna (SLPP) member Kokila Gunawardena recently accused Assistant Conservator of Forests, Devani Jayatilake of destroying 23 acres during an appearance she made on a state television channel.
These allegations were made in relation to the deforestation of the Mirigama, Botale, Dambagalla and Horakele forests that took place during the reign of the Yahapalanaya Government, despite the Assistant Conservator's awareness on the matter.
Speaking to Ceylon Today, Devani Jayatilake denied the allegations made against her and explained that an official press release is due to be released by the Department of Forest Conservation.
When inquired about the matter, Media Spokesperson of the Department of Forest Conservation, Nishantha Edirisinghe said the following,
"The deforestation of the Botale forest was permitted by us. The Department of Forest Conservation has approved the deforestation of certain areas of forests, in which new trees are later planted in an attempt to maintain the forests of Sri Lanka. The trees that have been cut down too, are reused for other purposes."
He noted that no wrong had been committed by Devani Jayatilake through her involvement in this project, and added that an official press release will be issued by the Department in this regard.
