SLFP slams Cardinal’s statement

The statement made by the Archbishop of Colombo, Malcolm Cardinal Ranjith regarding former President Maithripala Sirisena is clearly aimed at sabotaging the new programme of the SLFP, said SLFP Central Committee member and Habaraduwa Chief Organiser Thisara Gunasinghe.
He said, at a time when the SLFP is embarking on a new journey due to the failure of the present Government, the Cardinal’s statement cannot be accepted at all and that there would have been a certain group behind it. Gunasinghe also claimed that the statement was causing disunity among the Sinhala Buddhist and Catholic communities and that it was clear that the Cardinal has become a henchman of some political movement.
"The former President never said he would run for re-election, he said he would rebuild the SLFP instead. We need to find out why he made such a statement. He should have said this when the SLFP joined the Sri Lanka Podujana Peramuna (SLPP) during previous elections,” he added.
Adding that the leaders of any religion should not make politically biased statements, Gunasinghe said, due to the unsuccessful administration of the Government there is a huge demand for the SLFP at present. He was speaking at a Media briefing in Galle.
