Sports Slaza, Zahira’s shining star

Mohammed Imtiaz Slaza of Zahira College Colombo showed his all-round capabilities in the ‘Singer Trophy’ Under-19 Division One Inter Schools Cricket (Two-day) tournament conducted by Sri Lanka Schools Cricket Association in the 2019/20 season.

A third year coloursman, Slaza scored 627 runs with four half centuries at an average of 26.13. He also claimed 83 wickets for 1249 runs in 15 matches with five 5-wicket hauls at an average of 15.05.

Slaza commenced his cricket career at St. Mary’s College Hambantota under Mohammed Akram. Later he attended the Asian Cricket Academy under Safraz Farook. Slaza joined Zahira Colombo at Under-13 level and represented the team as a right-hand middle order batsman and right arm medium pace bowler in 2012. Safraz Farook turned him into an opening batsman and right arm off spinner in 2013. He scored more than 250 runs with two fifties and claimed 27 wickets.  

He represented the Under-15 team in 2014 and 2015. He scored more than 200 runs with a 50 and claimed 14 wickets in 2014. He captured 23 wickets in 2015. He represented the Colombo District and Western Province teams at the Prima Champions Cup Inter District and Inter Province Tournaments in 2014 and 2015.

He represented the Under-17 team in 2016 and 2017. He scored more than 200 runs and claimed 21 wickets in 2016. He improved in 2017 and scored 520 runs and captured 38 wickets.

He represented the first XI team in the 2017/2018 season as a fresher. He scored over 200 runs and captured 35 wickets in that season. He scored 677 runs with a 100 and four 50s and claimed 92 wickets with eight 5-wicket hauls as an all-rounder the following season. He was the runner-up best school all-rounder in the 2018/19 season. He was included in the 30-member Sri Lanka Under-19 squad for the last youth World cup.

He joined Moors SC to play first class cricket after the school season and represented the club in the SLC Major Youth Inter Club Cricket tournament in 2020.
