SL to get 200,000 more COVID-19 vaccine for elderly population
A total of 264,000 doses of the AstraZeneca COVID-19 vaccine will be provided to Sri Lanka under the COVAX facility on Sunday (07) announced the Ministry of Health.
It further stated that the elderly populations of the country are to be prioritized in its distribution.
The UNICIEF led COVAX facility has promised to donate enough doses to vaccinate 20% of the country’s population.
The first batch of 264,000 vaccines will be used to vaccinate those over 60 years of age, living in the areas most affected by COVID-19.
In addition, steps are being taken for 1.44 million doses to be provided to Sri Lanka by the end of May given the authorization from the World Health Organization for emergency use.
The COVAX program hopes to provide two billion vaccines to those living in lower and lower-middle income countries by the end of the year.
UNICEF is also working with the Ministry of Health to boost Sri Lanka’s ability to store, transport and allow for an efficient vaccination program that reaches even the most isolated communities.
