Local SL to corroborate UK's global clean energy agreement

The Cabinet has granted approval  for Sri Lanka to corroborate the No New Coal global energy agreement to be presented by the United Kingdom at the 26th Summit of the United Nations Convention on Climate Change.

The Summit will be held from 31 October to 12 November in Glasgow, Scotland in the UK.

UK has planned to propose a global energy convention void of coal to dedicate to a cleaner energy agenda joined with the United Nations and other member countries.

The signatories to the accord will be responsible and bound for minimizing environmental pollution and/or immediately stopping the issuance of new licenses for coal power electricity generation projects.

The signatories are also responsible for preventing new project constructions pertaining to electricity generation with coal power plants by the end of the year.

This Summit will review the implementation of the convention on climate change, Kyoto Protocol and the Paris Accord. Entering into decisions to further enhance and implement the said agreements is expected at this Summit.
