Sri Lanka are trailing West Indies by three runs with eight second innings wickets intact at close on day three of the second and final Test in Galle.
The home team in their second innings finished at 46 for two – both Dimuth Karunaratne and Oshada Fernando being run out.
Earlier, WI enjoyed a 49-run first innings lead as they were all out for 253.
In bowling, Ramesh Mendis claimed a career-best six for 70 runs, and fellow spinners Praveen Jayawickrama and Lasith Embuldeniya shared two wickets each.
Kraigg Braithwaite was the top-scorer for WI, making 72, while Kyle Meyers remained unbeaten on 36.
Sri Lanka made 203 in their first innings.
