SL win ODI series against SA after 8 years
Sri Lanka registered an ODI series win against South Africa 2-1 after eight years.
The hosts won the toss and elected to bat first, with Charith Asalanka’s 47 and debutant Maheesh Theekshana’s four wickets helping Sri Lanka beat South Africa by 78 runs.
Theekshana became Sri Lanka’s first international cricketer born in the 21st century to play for the national team, and was Sri Lanka's "trump card" in today's final of the three-match ODI series, Captain Dasun Shanaka said.
"He is a real prospect for us going forward", Shanaka added.
Charith Asalanka, making his debut earlier this year, was named Man of the Series, while fast-bowler Dushmantha Chameera was titled Man of the Match.
Riding on incredible performances from spinners, South Africa restricted Sri Lanka to 203/9 in the 50 overs, with Captain Keshav Maharaj removing three Sri Lankan batsmen while Linde and Shamsi took two wickets each.
Aiden Markram and Wiaan Mulder also chipped in with one wicket each.
Sri Lanka have not won an ODI series against South Africa since 2013, when they registered a 4-1 victory against Proteas.
