Local SL Navy recovers body of missing Indian fisherman

Navy rescue teams engaged in a search and rescue operation this morning (20) managed to recover the corpse of the missing fisherman of the Indian poaching vessel.

Two fishermen fell aboard a sunken Indian fishing boat poaching in Sri Lankan waters northwest of the Kovilan Point Lighthouse in the North on Monday (18), while a third was reported missing.

The two Indian fishermen rescued by the Navy had been summoned to the location by the Kayts Police, to identify the deceased, following which his identity as the third victim was confirmed.

The body of the deceased was transferred to the Kankasanthurai harbour by a naval craft earlier today, while an inquest  was carried out this afternoon by the Additional Magistrate of Kayts.

Jaffna Judicial Medical Officer and Representatives of the Consulate General Office of India in Jaffna were also present during the proceedings.

Subsequently, the body has been transferred to the Jaffna Teaching Hospital for onward legal proceedings.
