Sri Lanka is facing a difficult time due to the recent surge in COVID-19 cases, however the Government is dedicated to solve the issue with the help of international partners and well-wishers, Sri Lanka’s High Commissioner to the United Kingdom, Saroja Sirisena said on Friday (11).
She made these comments during her address to celebrate the Vesak Celebration in Sri Lanka and thanked the Sri Lankans residing in Britain for their support for the country during the difficult time.
“Buddhism is synonymous with Sri Lankan culture and has been the first religion in the world to officially ordain women and permit access to temples in all social strata. The progressiveness of religion has been a significant factor in the education of women in Sri Lankan society” Sirisena said.
She went on to say that the Vesak celebration is not only the most venerated festivals but also the most popular and celebrated festivals which touch the lives of all Sri Lankans irrespective of religious background. The High Commission said that their celebrations will become an annual celebratory event in order for the Sri Lankans in Britain to enjoy a glimpse of the festival which is enjoyed by Sri Lankans.
