Local SL detects another 160 cases of Omicron

Sri Lanka has detected another 160 cases of the Omicron COVID-19 variant.

Chandima Jeewandara, Director of Operations and Clinical Services at the Allergy, Immunology, and Cell Biology Unit of the Sri Jayewardenepura said these Omicron variant was identified from among 182 samples obtained from COVID infected persons.

The others are infected with the Delta variant.

A majority of the samples were obtained from residents of Colombo, Galle, Matara, Kandy, Trincomalee and Gampaha.

He emphasized that Omicron was becoming the dominant COVID variant in the country.

This is alarming news because two out of the three sublineages of Omicron have been found in the country.

He said the sublineage BA.2 carries additional mutations compared to BA.1 and scientists predict BA.2 infections may be more resistant to vaccination immunity and naturally acquired immunity

Hence, Dr Jeewandara urged the public to obtain their booster jabs, stressing the dire need to protect against the novel coronavirus.
