A number of local fishermen are languising in Maldivian jails due to poaching, the Fisheries Ministry said on 26 September.

To resolve this situation, Fisheries Minister Douglas Devananda had a meeting with Maldivian High Commissioner Omar Abdul Razzak at the Ministry office in Colombo on 26 September.

The two parties agreed to resolve this issue by drafting a resolution to the satisfaction of both countries, The drafing was entrusted to Ministry Secretary Indu Ratnayake.

At the meeting Razzak, expressed his disappointment at Sri Lanka imposing a ban on Maldive fish and dry fish imports to Sri Lanka. Razzak requested Devananda to remove these import restrictions.

Devananda said that he would speak to the President to get this ban lifted, which he attributed to COVID-19.

It was also agreed to exchange and transfer knowledge between the two countries in respect of technology relating to the marine and fisheries sectors and other know-how, where the opinions of fishermen of both countries would also be taken into account.
