SJB will defeat 20A – Sajith
The Samagi Jana Balawegaya (SJB) will not only oppose the 20th Amendment, but will also work towards defeating it, with the support of other opposition parties, Opposition Leader Sajith Premadasa said.
At an event titled 20 Paradawamu (Let’s defeat the 20th Amendment), he said most people accept that the 20th Amendment is detrimental to the country.
The Opposition Leader said, although he used to support the Executive Presidency in the past, he changed his opinion about it, due to the way anti-democratic aspects of the Executive Presidential system affected the country. He added that he supports reducing the President’s power.
He added that the 19th Amendment, enacted by the previous government, introduced many progressive changes, including the establishment of independent institutions to ensure good governance, reducing the huge power vested in the President, ensuring systematic appointment of Judges through the Constitutional Council, putting an end to interferences in the Judiciary’s affairs and limiting the number of ministers in the Government.
A constitutional amendment should aim at propelling the country forward. However, today, one person has been vested with all the powers, and Sri Lanka’s Constitution is being amended in a dictatorial manner.
