The Samagi Janabalawegaya (SJB) called the Government to reveal the terms of agreement signed with the U.S. Company, New Fortress Energy to transfer 40 per cent of shares of Kerawalapitiya LNG power plant immediately. Addressing a Media briefing SJB MP Tissa Attanayake alleged even some Cabinet Ministers are not aware of the signing of the agreement.
“We want to know the Government’s stance on this? They have to reveal the conditions of the agreements immediately to the public. We heard that even some Cabinet ministers are not aware of the matter. Also, no information regarding the agreements has been revealed to the country so far.
We can see that the Government is heading towards serious damage than the infamous Hedging Deal as a result of this,” Attanayake asserted. Speaking further, Attanayake claimed that the current Government did not receive a mandate to enter into such agreements either. “This is not about attracting foreign investments. The Government has no right to enter into agreements with foreign companies and keep its citizens in the dark.
This Government has been given power for only five years. If any Government tries to sell the country’s national assets in this manner they should be defeated. We understand the financial issues in the country. We know the problems regarding foreign currency in the country.
The Government is facing many other problems as well. But they should not use such matters as an excuse to sell national assets in this manner,” he stressed. Moreover, Attanayake claimed that signing such agreements without disclosing any information could be considered as a threat to the national security as well.
