SJB convenes ‘alternative parliament’ on social media

The Samagi Jana Balawegaya (SJB) yesterday (6) held a meeting which they called an “alternative parliament” after boycotting the parliamentary sitting, protesting the conduct of Government MPs in Parliament Chamber and Lobby last Friday (3) and Saturday (4).
The party boycotted yesterday’s sitting saying they would not attend until Speaker Mahinda Yapa Abeywardena ensures their safety inside and outside the Chamber.
A scuffle erupted in Parliament Chamber on 3 November after SJB MP Manusha Nanayakkara requested more time to speak.
Nanayakkara walking towards the Speaker’s chair caused a melee between Government and opposition MPs. A tense situation arose again in Parliament on 4 November following an exchange of words between Nanayakkara and State Minister Kanchana Wijesekara in connection with the incident on the previous day.
Following this, the SJB held a protest in front of the entrance of Parliament building yesterday morning. Afterwards they met at the SJB Head Office for ‘alternative parliamentary sitting’ and live streamed their speeches prepared for yesterday's Committee Stage Debate on social media.
