Spread of COVID-19 increased as Govt concealed truth: Dr. Nihal Abeysinghe
Former Director of the Epidemiology Unit, Dr. Nihal Abeysinghe, said that the spread of COVID-19 in the country increased as the Government concealed the truth about the situation.
He went on to say that the Government concealed the truth about the COVID-19 situation from the very beginning and did not take steps to make the public aware of it.
"The Government has always said that there was nothing to be afraid of and that they won't let COVID-19 spread. They also said that the situation was under control. The people lost their fear of COVID-19 due to these statements," he said.
He further stated that the Government not paying attention to the COVID-19 situation in India is another reason why COVID-19 situation in Sri Lanka worsened.
He added, "The government didn't pay attention to India's situation despite its seriousness, and didn't realize that it would affect us too. This is another reason that caused the second wave."
The number of COVID-19 cases reported under the second wave has exceeded 2,300. It was reported that out of 100 persons who were subjected to PCR tests at the Peliyagoda Fish Market, 49 tested positive for the virus.
Despite this situation, Health Minister Pavithra Wanniarachchi told Parliament that the COVID-19 pandemic has not escalated into a community spread.
Health Ministry Spokesperson, Dr. Jayaruwan Bandara, also said that there is no community spread.
Dr. Nihal Abeysinghe pointed out that the situation could worsen if the risk is not explained to the public.
