Former President Maithripala Sirisena exerted undue pressure on investigations conducted by institutions such as the CID and the Financial Crimes Investigation Division (FCID), said former Minister of Law and Order, Sagala Ratnayake.
He also said that Sirisena had in particular, exerted pressure when making certain arrests of Army officers and soldiers on various charges.
Such arrests were made over murder cases, Ratnayake said, adding that the officers who carried out investigations always obtained the Attorney General’s approval.
Ratnayake was testifying before the Presidential Commission of Inquiry into the 2019 Easter Sunday bombings, on 9 October.
Ratnayake said that when the CID made certain arrests, Sirisena called investigating officers for meetings with him where they were blamed by him for carrying out such investigations.
When a Senior State Counsel questioned Ratnayake as to why he resigned from the post of the Minister of Law and Order, the witness said that the undue pressure exerted by Sirisena was the main reason for him to resign.
