Kopai Police yesterday (15), arrested Member of the Tamil Makkal Theseeya Kuttani Party and former Parliamentarian M.K. Shivajilingam on charges of commemorating fallen Liberation Tigers of Tamil Eelam (LTTE) cadre Rasaiah Thyagee Thileepan alias Thileepan, flouting Court Orders.
The Jaffna Chief Magistrate’s Court had issued an Order on 14 September prohibiting the staging of any rallies or events commemorating Thileepan.
A top Police officer in Jaffna said Shivajilingam had been arrested for violating a Court order. After his arrest, a statement had also been recorded by the Kopai Police from Shivajilingam.
Thileepan had died while being engaged in a protest fast, opposite the Nallur Kovil in Jaffna against the resettling of the Sinhalese people in the Northern Province and demanding that the Indian Government should hold talks with the LTTE in this connection.
His 33rd death anniversary falls this year. Thileepan commenced his fast on 15 September 1987 and died 11 days later.
Meanwhile, the TNA said it vehemently opposes the decision taken by the Police to remove all cutouts, banners, and posters put up near the statue of Thileepan.
TNA MP S. Sridharan said the act had further shown the oppressive tactics adopted by the present regime.
Meanwhile, most of the Tamil politicians in the North had expressed their opposition to the move undertaken by the Government.
Though there were several commemorative events that had been planned to be held in several locations in Jaffna yesterday to mark Thileepan’s death anniversary, Shivajilingam who had taken part in one such event was arrested yesterday.
