Shares Start New Week in the Red

Despite closing the previous week at an eight-week high, the Colombo Stock Exchange started the new week on Monday (14) on a negative footing as the benchmark index posted losses on a relatively lower turnover with continued foreign exits.

 The benchmark All Share Price Index (ASPI), which started the day at 7,610.30 points, peaked to 7,623.55 points during the early hours before crashing to 7,553.64 points during mid-day and then recovered to settle at 7,582.27 points, down 28.03 points (0.37 per cent) compared to previous day’s close. 

The more liquid S&P SL20, which started the day with 3,067.03 points, gained to 3,069.79 points during the early hours before crashing to 3,037.83 points during mid-day and then recovered to 3,054.94 points, down 12.09 points (0.39 per cent) compared to the previous day’s close. The day’s turnover neared Rs 1.36 billion, higher than the Rs 2.27 billion recorded during the Market’s previous day’s trading. Shares of 247 listed companies were traded during the day of which 104 were losers ahead of 51 winners. More than 68.97 million shares changed hands during the 18,709 trades that took place.
