Several nabbed with Kerala cannabis

Five persons were arrested and a consignment of 111 kg of Kerala cannabis, having a street value of Rs 10 million, was seized, in a joint operation by the Navy and Coast Guard in the Northern seas off Madagal in Jaffna, yesterday (12).
“Witnessing some suspicious activity of the suspects while disposing some packages to the Northern sea from a boat, an immediate search operation was conducted in the Northern sea which led the Navy and the Coast Guards to recover the large consignment of this illegal substance while arresting the five suspects,” said Navy Media Spokesman, Capt. Indika de Silva, speaking to Ceylon Today.
Also, Navy and Police arrested two persons with over 33.65 kg of Kerala cannabis, during a special coordinated operation conducted at Naruvilikkulam in Mannar on 9 October. The raiding party seized 10 packages of Kerala cannabis in a gunny sack. The arrestees were identified as residents of the same area.
In another operation carried out in the Town area of Silawathura on 7 October, the Northwestern Naval Command in coordination with the Parayanakulam Police Special Task Force nabbed two suspects from the same locality, with 0.770 kg of Kerala cannabis made ready for sale.
Further, four suspects were arrested in separate raids, for being in possession of over 30 kg of Kerala cannabis and were produced before the Anuradhapura and Kilinochchi Magistrates, yesterday.
10.765 kg of Kerala cannabis was taken into custody along with a 61-year-old suspect in the Palei Police Division on 11 October. A raid on the suspect’s residence in Thaleiadi, Aliyawalei area, found Rs 14,500 cash suspected to have been illegally earned and an electronic scale used to measure the illegal substances.
22.30 kg of Kerala cannabis was found buried in an abandoned land guarded by dogs in the Kurundankulama area in Anuradhapura on 11 October. Three suspects including a 19-year-old and two 48-year-olds were arrested.
