SC informs Port City Bill is inconsistent with Constitution: Speaker
Speaker Mahinda Yapa Abeywardena informs Parliament that, the Supreme Court in its determination on the Port City Economic Commission Bill, has concluded that several clauses of the Bill are inconsistent with the Constitution.
SC has thus, determined that the Bill should be passed with a special majority and a referendum.
However, if the relevant clauses are amended, the Bill could be passed with a simple majority in Parliament, he added.
A debate on the Bill is due to be held at the Parliament on 19 May from 10:00 a.m. until 05:30 p.m. and will continue from 10:00 a.m. to 04:30 p.m. on 20 May.
