Seven arrested over jewellery store heist

Trincomalee Police have arrested seven suspects in connection with a robbery of a jewellery store where Rs 3.8 million worth of jewellery had been stolen with the use of a boat, said Police Spokesman DIG Ajith Rohana. The suspects were arrested on 25 February.
The robbery had taken place in the jewellery store in Trincomalee town on 8 February. According to witnesses, the suspects had reportedly used a boat to arrive and flee the scene of the crime. The boat and its owner have also been found by the Police.
The leader of the gang was a 35-year-old from Trincomalee named Nishantha. He is the brother of Ice Manju who was reportedly involved in several other crimes and is currently in hiding.
A hand grenade, a foreign made automatic pistol and six ammunitions were also found in their possession. Further investigations are underway by the Trincomalee Police.
The stolen jewellery however was not recovered but police are carrying out further investigations to recover the looted goods.
