Schools to be reopened under four stages
Schools across the island will be re-opened under four stages once the ongoing travel restrictions have been lifted, according to the Ministry of Education.
Accordingly, Grades 1 - 5 of 3,884 schools will commence under the first stage, Secretary to the Ministry of Education Prof. Kapila Perera said.
Speaking at a media briefing, he explained that the decision to reopen schools from Grades 1 - 5 was taken since children aged below 12 do not require the COVID-19 vaccination.
Prof. Perera further noted, however, that the vaccination of children aged between 12 - 15 and 16 - 19 will commence soon, based on the advice of the expert committee appointed with members of the Presidential Task Force on COVID-19 and officials of the Ministries of Health and Education.
Inquiries into the reopening of schools will be conducted with provincial, district and regional level officials related to the education and health sector within the upcoming week, the Professor said.
