Minister of Trade Dr. Bandula Gunawardena launched Lanka Sathosa’s eco-friendly bottle water campaign which will sell bottled water at a lower price than the market.

He said bottled water has become a booming industry in the country that has increased the disposal of used plastic bottles, causing unquantifiable environmental impact.

“As Lanka Sathosa has the largest network of outlets in the country, we intend to offer a relief by selling a bottle of drinking water at Rs 35. It will be widely available and help reduce the amount of plastic entering the environment. By doing so, we do not seek to compete with other companies that sell water bottles. However, I feel that if they apply this bottle-retrieval process, their business will also be more environmentally friendly,” he added.

In addition, he stated that the eco-friendly project is being carried to fulfil the responsibility committed to the Sathosa network by President Gotabhaya Rajapaksa’s election manifesto.

“A number of foreign multinational firms as well as certain local enterprises have initiated legal action against us for trying to provide better products to the consumer. However, we must continue to strive for our people to make the vision of prosperity a reality through such healthy and environment-friendly projects,” he said.
