Sarana Gunawardena released from CIABOC bribery cases
Former Deputy Minister Sarana Gunawardena was released from all bribery cases filed against him this morning (30), on orders of Colombo Chief Magistrate Buddhika Sri Ragala.
Assistant Director General of the Commission to Investigate Allegations of Bribery or Corruption (CIABOC), Asitha Anthony told the court that the case had been filed against the former Deputy Minister without the approval of the three commissioners.
Attorney-at-Law Niroshan Siriwardena, appearing on behalf of Gunawardena, thereby requested that the charges against his client be dropped, as it was difficult to proceed with the case.
Accordingly, Colombo Chief Magistrate Buddhika Sri Ragala ordered the release of the former Deputy Minister from all eight cases filed against him by CIABOC, after considering the submissions from both sides.
CIABOC had filed eight cases against Gunawardena, accusing him of causing losses to the State by leasing vehicles to the Development Lotteries Board (DLB) during his tenure as the Chairman in 2007.
