From November, sand will be transported by train, which will enable the public to buy quality sand at lesser prices, Transport Minister Gamini Lokuge, told Ceylon Today.
A tipper load of sand is about Rs 30,000 and when sand is transported by train, the price of a tipper load of sand can be reduced by about Rs 5,000, the Minister pointed out.
Minister Lokuge said sand will be transported from Punanai in Batticaloa to Colombo from 1 November and a trial run was done on 24 October, which he said proved to be very successful. One train can transport about 20 container loads of sand.
The Minister said this is also being done with the objective of providing the Railway Department with a certain profit and that it will continue.
Minister Lokuge also pointed out that when the country was being ruled by colonials, in addition to providing passenger transport on trains, they were used to transport goods, and as a result the Railway Department had been able to earn a large profit.
According to the Minister, trains will be used to transport other goods as well in the future.
