It was revealed in Parliament yesterday (21) that Opposition and SJB Leader Sajith Premadasa could have become a COVID-19 positive case.
This was revealed when Health Minister Pavithra Wanniarachchi told Parliament that Premadasa had been identified as a second level COVID-19 contact and the Government would take swift action to prevent him from being infected.
Responding to a question raised by Premadasa, she said the latter had visited a hotel in Yala where a COVID-19 infected person was found and when authorities did contact tracing, they had identified Premadasa as a second level contact.
“Within hours, our authorities informed Premadasa of the situation so that he could take necessary action. So Premadasa has first-hand experience of the effectiveness of the Government’s measures to prevent the pandemic spread. Therefore he must refrain from spreading falsehoods and creating panic,” Wanniarachchi said.
Premadasa said that many areas including Kuliyapitiya and Pannala had been shut down as the pandemic spread fast. “Now we have passed the cluster level to the community transmission level. The Government still lies to the people and tells us that we are still at the cluster level,” he said.
Minister Wanniarachchi said that the situation was under the control of health authorities and assured that the pandemic has not yet reached the community transmission level.
Minister Mahindananda Aluthgamage: “The Minister should take Premadasa’s prescription of the Plaquenil solution seriously in order to treat COVID-19 patients.
Premadasa: “I raised an important question. Doctors say that the pandemic has reached the community transmission level. Is the Health Minister taking responsibility by saying otherwise? There aren’t sufficient polymerase chain reaction (PCR) machines. Many had broken down. The entire country is at a standstill. The Health Minister does not accept it”.
Minister Wanniarachchi: “Premadasa is a person who found a medicine by browsing the Internet and went on telling people to use it during his Presidential campaign. What would have happened to people if he became the President? We should be proud as a country because in South Asia, we are very much ahead than other countries in conducting PCR tests.
Speaker Mahinda Yapa Abeywardena: “Jathika Jana Balawegaya (National People’s Power) Parliamentarian Anura Kumara Dissanayake has asked for a debate on the matter. You can take these issues up in that debate”.
SJB Kalutara District MP Kumara Welgama: “Three villages in Matugama have been locked down. I ask the Government to give the Rs 5,000 allowance to people in those villages too.”
The Speaker: “You can speak about it during the debate”.
