A foreigner who had tried to flee after attempting to leave for Paris via Abu Dhabi using a fake passport had been apprehended early yesterday (10), following a joint search operation by officials at the Bandaranaike International Airport (BIA), Department of Immigration and Emigration, Sri Lanka Air Force Commandos, BIA security and Police Officers.
According to BIA sources, the nationality of the foreigner was unknown at the time of his arrest.
They stated that the suspect had climbed up the roof of the airport when he was about to be arrested by Immigration and Emigration Department officers but was later caught following joint efforts by airport authorities.
BIA sources said they believe the suspect could be either a felon who had arrived in Sri Lanka having escaped from an overseas prison, a fugitive wanted by a foreign country or even a member of an international terrorist organisation. The suspect has been handed over to CID officers at the BIA for further inquiries.
