Rulers trying to portray 20A as democratic – Attanayake
By Nabiya Vaffoor
The ruling Party is trying to portray a democratic aspect, by stating that they might adopt some of the proposed clauses of the 20th Amendment, to avoid opposition towards its enactment, claimed Samagi Jana Balawegaya (SJB) Parliamentarian Tissa Attanayake.
“A group of ruling Party MPs including Dinesh Gunawardena, Vasudeva Nanayakkara, Wimal Weerawansa, Dr. Wijeyadasa Rajapakshe, Vidura Wickremanayake, and Gevindu Kumaratunga have delivered a set of diverse opinions about the 20th Amendment, which makes it crystal clear that there are some internal conflicts in the ruling Party on implementing this Amendment,” he added.
Attanayake claimed the actual reason the President wants to abolish the 19th Amendment is just to seize the power the Prime Minister has received from it.
He further confirmed that as a representative of the SJB, he confirmed that they will never support the 20th Amendment, which they deem unnecessary, unless the ruling Party will amend the minor errors in the 19th Amendment and continue with it.
Attanayake said so yesterday (20), while speaking at a Media briefing at SJB Headquarters.
