Rs 500K compensation for 14 Lankans
The Sri Lanka Bureau of Foreign Employment said that relevant files have been sent to the Sri Lanka Insurance Corporation for payment of compensation, on behalf of 14 Sri Lankans, who died abroad after contracting the Covid-19 virus.
A sum of Rs 500,000 each will be paid for those who had registered themselves at the Bureau, from among those who went abroad to work and died thus.
Among the 14 persons who died as a result of contracting the Covid-19 virus, it is reported that there are 12 males and two females. Nine of them have died in Saudi Arabia while four of them died in Kuwait and one person in Dubai.
An official of the Sri Lanka Bureau of Foreign Employment said that steps have been taken to pay Rs 40,000 each for religious rites for 14 who have been confirmed to have died as a result of the Covid-19 virus. He also said that insurance compensation will be paid on their behalf in the future.
Previously there was no provision for payment of compensation for incidents such as Covid-19 but the Minister in charge of the subject and the Chairman of the Bureau had intervened and come to an agreement with the Sri Lanka Insurance Corporation and compensation will be granted.
