The Rs 5,000 allowance for low-income families to help with New Year expenses was distributed successfully yesterday (12). However, it is reported that there were various obstructions in certain Divisional Secretariat Divisions.
The reason is because funds had been allocated for only one group from the 7 groups in some Divisional Secretariat Divisions. The Samurdhi Development Officers’ Association said as a result it was difficult to pay this allowance, and some families left empty-handed.
The Samurdhi Ministry said although there were shortcomings, the task was successfully carried out and will continue tomorrow as well.
Although the Government had made arrangements to provide low-income families with an allowance of Rs 5,000 for the New Year, because the Government had allocated money only for one group, many people were left disappointed yesterday (12). General Secretary of the Samurdhi Development Officers’ Association, Chamara Maddumakaluge, said so in response to a query by Ceylon Today.
Even though circulars had been issued to provide this Rs 5,000 allowance to 7 groups, including Samurdhi beneficiary families, low-income families, families with persons receiving the Elders’ Allowances, and families with individuals receiving the allowance for the disabled and circulars had been issued, the Government had allocated funds only for Samurdhi families. Maddumakaluge said other families had not been able to obtain this allowance.
He added that it was difficult to identify low-income families in a hurry and such a problematic situation arose since the Government issued the circulars hastily.
